About Susan Howlett
Consultant to hundreds of nonprofits throughout the United States over the last 20 years, Susan cut her teeth being a board member, executive director, and development director first.
She has served for many years as core faculty in the Fundraising Certificate Program at the University of Washington, where she received their 2004 Award for Teaching Excellence. She developed the Nonprofit Management Certificate Program at Bellevue Community College, where she has taught grantwriting, fundraising and board classes for 15 years.
The Puget Sound Grantwriters Association grew from a small grassroots organization to the largest association of grantwriters in the country under Susan's ten-year leadership. While there, she worked closely with the regional association of funders, putting on joint conferences and training new grantors. Many of her current clients are grantmakers who hire Susan to strengthen their grantees.
In 2004, Susan co-authored Getting Funded: The Complete Guide to Writing Grant Proposals with Dr. Mary Hall. Acclaimed by users across the country as the definitive text, the book has gained five stars on Amazon.com. Susan's forthcoming book, Getting Your Board Members to Raise Money Joyfully, will be published soon by Word & Raby.
The Northwest Development Officers Association granted Susan their prestigious lifetime Professional Achievement Award in 2001, to honor her years of service as a board member, a leader of countless conferences and workshops, and a mentor to scores of colleagues in the development profession.
Susan speaks, trains and consults nationally – due to her reputation for offering simple solutions to complex, systemic problems, delivered with stories, humor and chocolate.
